How does a gummed envelope closure work?
Gummed envelopes have a moisture-activated adhesive strip on the inside of the flap. To seal: moisten the gummed strip (with a damp sponge, wet cloth or tongue), fold the flap down and press firmly. The adhesive activates on contact with moisture and sets as it dries. Do not over-moisten — excess moisture can cause the flap to wrinkle or the envelope paper to warp.

Can gummed envelopes be used in franking machines?
Gummed envelopes are compatible with most franking machines — the gummed flap does not affect franking on the front face. Seal the envelope before franking, or use the machine's integrated moistening system if available.
